A. JOB SUMMARY

Department Head assumes the educational leadership and supervision for the assigned department to
ensure that students are supervised in a safe learning environment and provided instruction that meets and
exceeds Curricula and directives of Western International School.
Achieving academic excellence requires that the Department head works under the supervision of and in
collaboration with the International Program Director and Vice School Principal to lead teachers and to
communicate effectively with parents.

B. KEY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Planning and Preparation

 

• Oversees the development, implementation, and monitoring of a comprehensive subject area
action plan for each phase of the curriculum cycle including curriculum assessment, program
support and teachers’ development.
• Facilitates grade level planning and assessment.
• Plans and facilitates student activities to support instructional practice.
• Develops a plan for full-time teachers through the appropriate delegation of tasks and ensuring an
effective use of their time.
 

Curriculum Development

 

• Supervises and evaluates the current curriculum in the various content areas within the
  department so as to ensure the attainment of the school and government’s goals and objectives
  while meeting the instructional needs of all students.
• Provides leadership in curriculum initiatives, the learning and teaching process and coordination of
  the kindergarten program.


Resource Management


• Develops and implements teaching methodology on a regular basis to support and promote
   school-wide instructional objectives such as student-centered approach and critical thinking across
   the curriculum of the department.
• Develops an action plan for program improvement.
• Assesses and requests materials and equipment in order to provide instructional support to
  teachers in their attempts to meet curricular outcomes.


Leadership


• Provides active, positive and continuous leadership in the Early Childhood Education department.
This will include mentoring, collaboration and the sharing of information so that staff motivation is
at an optimum level to encourage continuous improvement in the quality of teaching and
learning.
• Creates effective teams by inspiring and motivating staff. Being a positive role model for other
   staff.
• Meets with other departments and teachers to evaluate, develop, monitor and plan
   implementation of curriculum, action plan for the subject area, ensure program continuity
• Coordinates and manages the substitution plan for teachers (selects and assigns teachers) who are
   absent or on leave to ensure that no class is without a teacher at any time.
• Monitors individual teachers on a regular basis by:
o Observation and evaluation of lessons
o Checking lesson plans

o Monitoring or marking and assessment


 Communication


• Meets with the International Program Director to discuss the curriculum cycle process and other
  program aspects
• Meets with the International Program Director and Vice School Principal to keep them informed of
  progress and plan for needs throughout the year
• Holds regular departmental meetings, at least once a month, at which minutes are taken and
circulated or made available.
• Liaises with Vice School Principals to ensure that quality work are encouraged, produced and
updated regularly.
• Promotes communication between home and school.
• Encourages involvement of parents in their child’s learning


Reporting


• Keeps the supervisor and management informed about projects, changes, problems, etc. by
  providing accurate, substantive feedback in a timely manner. Reporting procedure and frequency
  is determined by the supervisors.
• Secures support of teachers in establishing meetings as a forum for information sharing and
  feedback.
• Conduct a year-end performance appraisal with recommendations for each teacher.

Job Requirements

JOB QUALIFICATION

  • Strong understanding of child development in the 3-6 age bracket, and experience designing play-
    based, inquiry-oriented learning experiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in multicultural settings and with children from diverse
    linguistic/cultural backgrounds.
  • Additional desirable: training or experience in early years frameworks (e.g., EYFS, IEYC, Montessori,
    Reggio), first-aid/CPR certification.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Early Childhood Education, Early
    Childhood Development, Education or
    a related field.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years teaching
    experience in early childhood
    settings (ideally in an
    international/inclusive context).

  •  Commitment to safeguarding, child protection, inclusive education.
  • Warm, caring, patient and responsive to children’s emotional, social and developmental needs. 
  • Creative, organised and flexible; able to plan ahead and adapt on the fly.

  • Enthusiastic about early years learning, curious about innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Excellent communication skills (English required; additional language an advantage).
